Katerina Papatheu, former professor at the University of Calabria, is assistant professor in Modern Greek Language and Literature at the Department of Humanities, University of Catania (Italy). Her Chair has been formally accredited - both by the Hellenic Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs and the Centre for the Greek Language - as an examination centre for the International Certificate of Attainment in Greek. At the University of Catania she is a member of the scientific committee of the PhD in History- Arts - Linguistics, and ITALSTRA (Italian Language School for Foreigners). Furthermore, she is a member of the National and European Association for the Modern Greek Studies, of the Research Centre of Modern History (KENI) Panteion University of Athens, and a representative of the Italian Ministry of Education (MIUR) as a national commissioner of graduation sessions. She has also taught at the SISSIS (Interuniversity School of Specialization for Secondary School Teachers), and in various II-level University Master Degrees. She has translated and edited Greek writers into Italian for the publishing houses Einaudi, Marzorati, Obliquo, Bonanno, and has collaborated with various periodicals in Italy and Greece, as well as with encyclopaedias (UTET, Bompiani, Mondadori). Thanks to several collaboration with Greek and Turkish study centres, and especially long research stays at the Maison des Sciences dell’Homme de Paris, she has written articles and essays about various aspects and problems of Modern Greek Language and Literature. Topics mainly covered include a) 19th- and 20th-century Greek poetry and narrative; b) cultural relations between Greece and the Ottoman Empire between the 16th and early 20th century; c) the language question and the early Greek printing; d) Ancient myths, folk traditions and Greek War Independence: text and iconology.
